Program Description

Partnering with UNIVA La Universidad Catolica graduate OT students and faculty explore the provision of Occupational Therapy and other healthcare services in Guadalajara, Mexico, the second largest city in Mexico and one of the fastest growing cities in North America.

Faculty Leader: Dr. Michele Tilstra

Coursework – Students participating in a Global Health program will enroll in OT 650 International Practice in Occupational Therapy.

This course will provide occupational therapy students an opportunity to learn about global health issues within the Mexican culture that impact the provision of services.
-Prior to the trip, students will have reading assignments and class discussions on beliefs and traditions in the Mexican culture. They will explore government and economic factors that affect the delivery of healthcare in Mexico. Students will identify major health concerns that are prevalent in the area and understand the issues of ethics and human rights.
-While in Mexico, students will have assignments reflecting on cultural observations within the community and healthcare settings paying attention to how those cultural practices impact the wellbeing of the Mexican population.
-The students will observe the provision of occupational therapy services in various settings within Mexico.
-Students will discuss how therapists who may not have the same resources can still provide quality therapy interventions.
-Students will submit a proposal of a simple, cost-effective treatment intervention that can be added to the on-site therapists' supply of treatment interventions.
-OT students will also discuss how occupational therapy could further contribute to the health and well-being of the population.
