Bosnia and Herzegovina

Description

Bosnia and Herzegovina is located on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Croatia, Serbia, and Montenegro. Bosnia and Herzegovina has a 20 Km coastline to the Adriatic Sea, making it appear landlocked. This country is comprised of hills in the north and becomes mountainous in the central and southern parts. Bosnia has a continental climate and Herzegovina is made up of Mediterranean climate and topography.

This country gained its independence in 1991, after the fall of communist Yugoslavia. It is now a Parliamentary Democracy that is decentralized and administratively divided, which wants to increase its self-governance. The President and the Prime Minister are seated in the capital of Sarajevo. Bosnia and Herzegovina are not part of the European Union, which therefore still employs its own currency, the Convertible Mark.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is architecturally diverse, shaped by four major periods in time. This makes the country more culturally and architecturally unique. Some of the sites that display the influences are the National Library or Museum. Bosnia and Herzegovina also have a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Stari Most in Mostar, which is definitely worth a visit. Football is the most popular sport in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia has a rich culture, including poets, writers, musicians, and film-makers. Traditional Bosnian and Herzogovinian songs are ganga, rera, and from Ottoman era the most popular is sevdalinka.
